A young man in a handsome suit showed up on the front porch this morning. I was busy pounding out dough for our Sunday biscuits and attending to the country ham frying on the stove, so Bon Iver answered the door. They exchanged a few words, and the young man went on his way.
‘Who was that?’ I asked.
‘Just a lost soul trying to sell us salvation. I told him he’d come too late — I’ve already been saved, and my savior’s right there in the kitchen with her hands covered in flour, her apron stained with grease, and her heart full of a love so strong and pure it could wash the whole world of its sins.’
We kissed, and it felt like he was praying.
